After decades of global isolation, the end of China’s Cultural Revolution in 1976 brought novel avenues of international commerce leading to unprecedented cultural and economic shifts. Embracing the immediacy of print and digital photography, traditionally trained artists utilized the camera to distill the visual, physical, and emotional evolution of daily life. “From Grain to Pixel: Contemporary Chinese Photography” showcases 37 works created between 1993 and 2006 from preeminent Chinese artists amidst a backdrop of cultural, political, and technological transformation. Works by these 14 artists present a progression of Chinese photography as an artform, created during a robust, burgeoning period of artistic experimentation. “From Grain to Pixel” showcases a variety of approaches to photography that encapsulate its evolution through works ranging from small-scale black and white photographs to large-scale color and panoramic scenes. Chronicling the technological innovations of 35 mm and large format film to digital photography, these artists photographed their developing realities from grain to pixel. Featured artists include Cang Xin, Cui Xiuwen, Hai Bo, Hong Hao, Hong Lei, Huang Yan, Qiu Zhijie, RongRong, Tong Dazhuang, Wang Qingsong, Weng Fen, Xing Danwen, Zhang Huan, and Zhang Peili.
